TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- A memorial to Tulsa

official said Ground was broken Friday for the memorial.
Once completed, the only larger police memorial will be
the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial in
Washington, D.C., said Officer Mark Wollmershauser,
trustee of the Tulsa Police Officers' Memorial
Foundation. The foundation has worked for eight years to
raise enough money to start the memorial. "It has been
eight long years," Wollmershauser said. "This is a great
day. We are getting started. We are going to have
something we can be very proud of."
The foundation has raised
$350,000, Wollmershauser said. The memorial is expected
to cost $450,000 to build and $200,000 for care and
maintenance of the site outside the Police Training
Center. The memorial's centerpiece is an honor guard
officer handing a fallen officer's memorial flag to a
young girl, who symbolizes a survivor of the officer.
Artist Jay O'Meilia designed
